A Brief History of Weighwell, and the Birth of the PTW.
Innovation From The Start
Formed in 1988,Weighwell began by
servicing and maintaining weighing
equipment of all shapes and sizes
from small laboratory scales to large
weighbridges. Growing steadily, the
move into product development and
manufacturing came naturally and very
soon our PTW portable train weighing
systems were recognised with a DTI
Innovation Award in 1995.
The Portable Train Weighing Concept
The Portable train weigher (PTW) is able to weigh rail vehicles
without the need for expensive changes
to the track or foundations. All rail vehicle
wheels have a flange that prevents the
train from "jumping the track". Weighwell
designed a frame with adjustable entry
and exit ramps and a built-in loadcell.
The frame lifts the wheel tyre but keeps
the flange within the rail head allowing
the simultaneous weighing of the wheel
flange through a signal from the loadcell,
which is converted into weight by the
controller, giving a high degree of accuracy.
Tested And Approved
After extensive tests and trials the PTW
concept achieved a second DTI Innovation
Award in 1997. Demonstrations with
leading rail industry operators and
Railtrack proved that what was previously
thought to be impossible was now a
reality - a portable train weighing system
that could be carried by two men to a rail
vehicle located anywhere. Realising the
potential of the system, the PTW was
approved by Railtrack.
Up And Running
The PTW was officially launched in 1997
and LUL and Serco Railtest became the
first companies to use the PTW. The first
extensive use of PTW was Railtrack's
"Virtual Quarry" Project where the limited
space and physical nature of their fifteen
sites precluded the use of a fixed weighing
system. The rest is history.
Safety And Savings
Train safety and fast, efficient working are
paramount concerns in the rail industry.
The accuracy and flexibility of the PTW
system not only identifies problems that
could lead to excessive wear, it also
delivers cost and time savings. Proven "in
the field", the PTW is now being used around the world including
the UK, Europe, the Far East, Australia and
the USA.
Weighing Up The Future
Alongside the continued success of the
PTW, we also offer the Meridian and
Track Cell products as part of our rail
weighing system portfolio. We also cater
for our customers' bespoke requirements,
something which was highlighted recently
with the development of a bogie press
weighing system that provides individual
wheel weights for bogies in production.
Plus, we still have industrial, agricultural
and process weighing teams. So you can
still come to us for solutions whatever
your weighing requirements are.
